How to identify which iPhone you have

Apple devices look rather similar, so it is possible to have difficulties while differentiating between the models. If you are not sure which model you have, this article can help you identify it.

How to identify which iPhone you have

1. Model A number on the back

The iPhone identification number is written on the back of your phone. It appears after “Model” and starts with the letter A. The number is rather small, so you may need a magnifying glass to read it.

MAC number

If you have the number, you can find it in the following list and see which model you have:

  • A1203: Original iPhone
  • A1241: iPhone 3G
  • A1303: iPhone 3GS
  • A1332, A1349: iPhone 4
  • A1387: iPhone 4S
  • A1428, A1429: iPhone 5
  • A1456, A1507, A1526, A1529 or A1532: iPhone 5c
  • A1453, A1457, A1528, A1530 or A1533: iPhone 5s
  • A1549, A1586 or A1589: iPhone 6
  • A1522, A1524 or A1593: iPhone 6 Plus
  • A1633 or A1688: iPhone 6s
  • A1634 or A1687: iPhone 6s Plus
  • A1660, A1778 or A1779: iPhone 7

  • A1863, A1905 or A1906: iPhone 8
  • A1864, A1897 or A1898: iPhone 8 Plus
  • A1865, A1901 or A1902: iPhone X

If you cannot find the Model A number on the back of your phone, it means that you have the newest iPhone. Luckily, there are other ways to find out exactly which phone you have.

2. The M number (or SKU model number) in Settings

Another way to identify your phone is by going to Settings and selecting General -> About. Here you will see a number beginning with an M (or an N, if you have a replacement model). This number is usually referred to as the M number or the SKU. If you use this number to search the Web, you will find information about the model of your phone, its color, its storage capacity, etc.

3. Appearance

If you cannot find neither one of the above mentioned numbers, you may be able to figure out which model you have by simply checking the iPhone’s external features.
