AspectSkip adware

AspectSkip Adware (Mac) is practically identical to NavigateNetwork, ClickManager, MemoryFunction, and countless other adware. They all do the same thing, aka spam you with ads. They also have browser hijacker characteristics, which means your browser’s settings may be changed. To be more specific, AspectSkip Adware (Mac) may set a different homepage/new tabs for your browser, as well as change your default search engine. The changes can affect all popular browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari. You will also be unable to undo these settings changes while the adware remains installed on your Mac.

Adware’s main purpose is to expose you to as much sponsored content as possible. So you will see a neverending stream of ads on your screen when browsing. All types of ads will appear, including banners, pop-ups, regular ads, and even ads. Regular ads can be quite annoying to deal with, adware-generated ads will be much worse. Furthermore, they can expose you to potentially dangerous content, including tech-support scams, fake virus alerts, and giveaway scams. To be on the safe side, we don’t recommend interacting with any ads while adware is present on your Mac.

Adware is also known for its intrusive data collection practices. It will track your browsing and collect certain information, including what sites you visit, what you search for, what content you interact with, your IP address, etc. There’s really no reason to put up with this data collection, especially because you get nothing in return.

Adware installation methods

Adware developers use various deceptive methods to install on users’ computers. Adware can be attached to free software as an extra offer, disguised as a useful extension, hidden in fake update/virus alerts, etc. If you follow a few simple rules, you should be able to avoid installing these kinds of infections.

Adware often installs via the software bundling method, which is why it’s very important that you install programs using the correct settings. Incorrectly installing free programs can result in various junk programs installing on the computer and disrupting regular computer use. Adware, browser hijackers, and similar infections come attached to free software as extra offers. When users install the freeware, the added offers are authorized to install alongside without explicit permission. Users aren’t even informed about the offers. Because it’s a rather sneaky installation method, programs that install via the bundling method are often classified as potential threats by anti-virus programs.

The offers that are added to programs are technically optional but they need to be manually deselected to prevent their installation. Many users are unable to do that because offers are hidden. Unless users are paying close attention during installation, they may not even notice the added offers. If you want to prevent unwanted installations, you need to pay close attention during the process. Most importantly, you need to choose Advanced (Custom) settings when given the option. The installation window may recommend using Default but these settings will conceal all offers are allow their installations. If you opt for Advanced settings, all added offers will be made visible, and you will be able to deselect the ones you do not want. There are usually at least a couple of added offers, and we recommend deselecting all of them. Even if an offer appears useful at first sight, do not allow it to install.

This adware could have also been advertised as a useful extension that can improve your browsing experience. If you downloaded/installed the adware yourself, thinking that it will be useful, you need to research programs before installing them in the future. You can use a search engine like Google to look into the program and check whether it’s safe to use.

Adware is also often hidden in fake virus/update alerts. These fake alerts usually appear on questionable websites but can be blocked with a reliable adblocker program. Keep in mind that no matter how convincing virus and update alerts may seem, if they appear in your browser, they’re scams.
